Easter on Florida’s Historic Coast

A great tradition returns in 2024 with lots of pomp and circumstance–and fun for all.

A celebration at sunrise services, Easter egg hunts for the children, and Sunday brunches at any one of many restaurants around town is all part of the Easter celebration here on Florida’s Historic Coast.

The Easter Parade, or the Parade of Horses and Carriages, as it is known locally, draws thousands of spectators and participants along the bayfront route. Even the Easter Promenade at The Plaza de la Constitucion has become an event in itself, where locals and visitors alike come dressed in their Easter best, including bonnets, top hats and jewelry to compete for titles.

Here’s our list of “must” events to celebrate the Easter holiday in grand style:

Sunday, April 13, 12-2 p.m.

The Blessing of the Fleet welcomes all vessels, commercial and pleasure boats, to receive a blessing from the Bishop of the Diocese of St. Augustine. This historical event kicks off the Easter holiday on Palm Sunday. After Mass at the Cathedral Basilica on the Plaza de la Constitucion, a procession to the St. Augustine Municipal Marina led by local religious leaders and the St. Augustine Royal Family, where the Bishop then sprinkles holy water on each vessel in the awaiting fleet of decorated ships, for luck and safe journeys.

Monday, April 14, 6-7 p.m.

Royal Knighting Ceremony takes place at the Cathedral Basilica side courtyard along St. George Street. The “Royal Family,” portrayed by local residents in full costume, bestows knighthood in recognition of St. Augustine residents who have made significant contributions to the community throughout the year.

Friday, April 18, 6:30-9 p.m.

All are welcome to join this community worship on Good Friday at The AMP. Presented by Colonial Church, gates open at 5 p.m., service begins at 6:30. Food trucks and concessions will be available. St. Augustine Amphitheatre is located at 1340 A1A South, St. Augustine.

Saturday, April 19, 9–10:30 a.m.

The Easter Parade, also known as the “Parada de Caballos y Coches” is a tradition that dates back to 1956. Spectators are invited to watch from the streets as the Royal Family, Storm Troopers, the Easter Bunny, floats, pirates and carriage horses wearing their beautiful Easter bonnets parade along San Marco Avenue and the bayfront. This fun-filled parade starts at the Old Jail and travels along Avenida Menendez to the Plaza de la Constitucion.

Sunday, April 20, 7-8 a.m.

Easter Sunrise Services take place at 7:00 a.m. on Crescent Beach and Vilano Beach and are open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring beach blankets, towels, or chairs for their comfort on the sand.

Easter Sunday services at local houses of worship take place throughout Easter morning.

Sunday, April, 1–2:30 p.m.

The annual Easter Promenade is a festive celebration where all are invited to wear their Sunday best and most creative Easter bonnets as they promenade along the Plaza de la Constitucion and the Gazebo. Awards are given in many fun categories and all are welcome to participate and enjoy the spectacle with family and friends. The “Royal Family” kicks off the event in their historic garb.

Finally, no Easter Sunday is complete without an Easter brunch with friends and family. So, however you choose to celebrate the occasion, Florida’s Historic Coast remains ready to make your Easter a memorable one.
